Mission and ManagementCarShareHFX is Halifax's first multi-vehicle Car Sharing network. Tribute is due to Commonweal CarShare Ltd, for bringing the concept to Halifax in 2001/02. We like building on great ideas. CarShareHFX is 100% Canadian and locally-owned. We're dedicated to providing greater mobility and personal freedom to people living in Halifax; and, to reducing carbon emissions and pollution through efficiency and choice. Our goal is to have a shared-vehicle within a 5 minute walk of anywhere in the city; at every MetroTransit bus terminal; and at the end of your street. We know that car sharing is crucial to the long term health of our urban environment - and economy. MissionBy providing businesses and residents of the Atlantic region the option of 24/7 access to vehicle mobility without the cost of ownership, CarShareHFX will be contributing to a full complement of mobility options while decreasing the dependency on personal or organization-owned vehicles and the costs to themselves and society. HistoryIn the mid-1990s, a news story about European car sharing brought this market-based solution to air quality and traffic problems to the attention of a few enterprising Canadians. Quebec-based Communauto was North America's first carshare organization, and now has over 700 vehicles. In January 1997, Tracey Axelsson and four others pioneered Vancouver's Cooperative Auto Network (CAN), the first carshare organization in English-speaking North America, which now has 225 vehicles. On October 6, 1998, AutoShare was launched with a group of 16 pioneering members sharing 3 cars in Toronto. By 2007 it had grown to 7,000 individuals, families, and businesses sharing cars for their business and personal driving needs. And now CarShareHFX has arrived in the Maritimes!
